Elle est la petite-nièce de Giovanni Schiaparelli, astronome découvreur des canaux martiens et la grand-mère de Marisa Berenson et de sa sœur Berry, épouse de l'acteur Anthony Perkins.
Le destin la conduit à Paris en 1922 où elle ouvre une boutique Pour le Sport en 1927. Elle y fait la connaissance des artistes en vogue, Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Man Ray, les dadaïstes!
Elle doit sa notoriété à ses sweaters en tricot ornés de nœuds, de cravate en trompe l'œil. Elle élargit son activité aux tenues de sport, de ville, puis aux tenues de soirée.
Elle installe sa maison de couture en 1935 dans les salons du 21, place Vendôme où viennent s'habiller la duchesse de Windsor ou Greta Garbo.
C'est dans ce décor aménagé par Jean-Michel Frank et orné des objets de Diego Giacometti qu'Elsa Schiaparelli présente ses plus fameuses créations.
Sachant s'entourer d'artistes comme Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, Marcel Vertès ou Serge Matta, elle réalise des modèles largement influencés par l'esthétique surréaliste.
Shocking ! sera son maître mot, celui qu'elle donne à sa couleur préférée, le rose, à l'un des parfums qu'elle a créés et à son autobiographie !
